Will Partygate sink Tory AND Labour in council elections?

Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: The shock revelation today that Labour lied about an event where leader Sir Keir Starmer is alleged to have broken lockdown rules will send shockwaves among candidates standing in next week's council elections.

The Tories were already braced for losses because of Boris Johnson's fine for attending a Downing Street party at the height of Covid restrictions.

Now Labour has been thrown into disarray after the Daily Mail revealed deputy leader Angela Rayner was present at the Keir Starmer event in April last year, after denying her presence for months.

“Previous denials were an honest mistake,” a Labour source told the newspaper.

Understandably, the public are now likely to conclude “they were all at it”.

The Partygate scandal is - in theory - a gift for the Liberal Democrats in Southport, now their Tory and Labour opponents are on the ropes.

Next Thursday's Sefton Council election will be an opportunity for voters to decide if they want to punish political parties involved in the Covid row.

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, May 5.
