£35M Budget Boost to Transform Sefton: Jobs, Homes, and Visitor Attractions

Residents in Sefton will see major investment in the borough as the council set its budget on Thursday (26 February).

Despite the challenging financial position within local government, Sefton Council is committed to ambitious plans that will create new jobs, provide more quality homes for local people and attract more visitors to support the local economy.

Essential Services

The budget includes more than £35 million to protect essential services - particularly care, education and community support - and ensure Sefton remains a borough where residents continue to receive the support they need. 

Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “I’m pleased that Council has agreed this balanced and responsible budget, which protects the essential services that our residents rely on and allows us to continue delivering the ambitious projects that will shape Sefton’s future.

“This has been one of the most challenging financial years local government has ever faced, yet we have worked hard to safeguard support for our most vulnerable children, adults and families.

Major Regeneration

“At the same time, we are pressing ahead with major regeneration schemes in Bootle and Southport, investing in our roads, public spaces and neighbourhoods, and backing the projects that boost local jobs and our visitor economy.”

The budget also reaffirms Sefton’s commitment to major long‑term regeneration projects including the redevelopment of Bootle Strand, the restoration of Southport Pier and the Marine Lake Events Centre.

It also includes an innovative partnership with The Sovini Group that will generate cash for the council in land sales but also see the delivery of 1,000 affordable, quality homes for local people by 2030.

“Through our partnership with The Sovini Group, we will also deliver 1,000 new affordable homes by 2030, using Council‑owned land to create better housing options for local people while supporting communities and reducing homelessness,” said Councillor Atkinson.

“The decisions we have taken tonight ensure stability today while laying the groundwork for a stronger, fairer and more prosperous Sefton tomorrow. I want to thank residents, partners and staff for their ongoing support as we continue to deliver on the priorities that matter most to our borough.”
