JAILED | Today, Wednesday 20 November, a man has been jailed and issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order after assaulting shop staff and multiple shoplifting offences in Southport.

Gareth Shaw, 44 years, of Links Avenue in Southport, appeared at Wirral Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to six counts of theft and common assault.

The court heard that on Monday 18 November, Shaw entered Matalan on Marine Parade and took £80 worth of toys from the store. He became aggressive to people and pushed a shop assistant when he was confronted on the theft.

Shaw was also convicted of stealing items from Tesco and Holland & Barrett on Chapel Street.

He was sentenced to 17 weeks in prison and issued with a two-year banning order to not enter the following areas in Southport; Chapel Street, Co-Op store on Fylde Road and not to enter Ocean Plaza until 19 November 2026.

Detective Inspector Sara Lang said: “Shaw would brazenly take stock and walk out of shops without paying for the goods. He was identified on a number of occasions of stealing items from different stores in Southport.

“No one should be assaulted or subjected to aggressive behaviour, especially shop staff who are carrying out their duties, and this will not be tolerated.

“Theft from shops is not a victimless crime and has a huge impact on not only the business but the community as well.

“If your Shaw breaches of this order following his release from prison then please report this to Merseyside Police.

“We hope this serves as a clear warning to others, that the force will robustly take steps to address prolific offenders, working with businesses and partners.”
