Abandoned Camelot theme park to reopen as immersive zombie experience

A former theme park in Lancashire, UK, is being brought back from the dead in more ways than one, with the former Camelot set to reopen as a drive-in immersive zombie cinema experience.

The park, which was located near Chorley, first opened in 1983 and was based on the story of 'Camelot, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table'. In 1995 the attraction welcomed more than 500,000 visitors a year but over the years attendance drastically declined, leading to the park’s eventual closure in 2012. Since then, the site has been left to the fates, with the castle fabrications and old buildings falling victim to time, vandalism and graffiti.

But a decade later, a group behind a previous successful cinema event have taken inspiration from the site’s derelict and somewhat creepy appearance, announcing the launch of Camelot Rises - a cinema experience featuring scare actors roaming the grounds of the abandoned attraction.

Upon visiting the park, guests will watch one of a number of horror classics, including 28 Days Later, Get Out and The Hills Have Eyes, among others.

In addition to the undead actors, the immersive experience will also feature a display of light, sound, smoke and gore, which paired with the abandoned theme park setting will create quite the undead spectacle.

“This is Camelot, but not as you know it,” says a statement from the organisers of the event. “Something deadly has destroyed the legendary world of Camelot, now overrun by zombies hungry for human flesh! As the army struggles to keep control of the area, it’s time to see if you can survive this gruesome night of post-apocalyptic horror.”

Through February and March, 25 showings are taking place at either 5:30 pm or 9 pm. Food and drink will also be available on-site. Entry costs £50  per car, with age restriction based on the cinema showing.
