We have today received the very sad news that Alex Russell passed away yesterday after a short illness, aged 78.
Considered by many as one of the greatest players to wear a Southport shirt we offer our sincere condolences to all his family and friends.
Alex made 346 league starts for Southport scoring 75 goals including one of the most important goals in the history of Southport Football Club when he grabbed a 93rd minute eqauliser to secure the Fourth Division title in 1972-73.
When asked about THE GOAL Alex always said he wasn’t supposed to take the free kick and just stepped up and hit it! Even when you look at the picture today you still wonder how it went in.
