Baby born at 27 weeks set to spend first Christmas at home

A Hesketh Bank couple whose son is now a happy and healthy toddler after being born at just 27 weeks is looking forward to celebrating a first Christmas at home.

Rebecca and Sam Hole’s son Lucas was born in November last year weighing just under three pounds but thanks to the expertise and support of staff in the Neonatal Unit at Ormskirk Hospital, is now a thriving toddler.

Lucas spent his first 52 days of life, and last Christmas, in the unit receiving the specialist treatment he needed. But this year will be at home with mum and dad on what will be the family’s first Christmas Day together at home.

It will be a day that Rebecca says will be “special.’’

She said: “We experienced a traumatic event that led to Lucas being brought into the world at just 27 weeks, weighing 2lb 9oz. Unprepared and very scared, the support and high level of care ourselves and Lucas received was exceptional.

“Without the help of the nurses and doctors our little boy wouldn't be with us today and we can only sincerely thank them.

“A neonatal journey is one that is difficult to describe but after spending 52 days on the unit which included our first Christmas and new year period, we would say it was a rollercoaster journey. But thanks to the amazing specialist care Lucas received he is now doing really well and is the happiest little boy. As parents we couldn't be prouder.

“We will always remember this Christmas as the most special with Lucas being home and we send our love and support to all at the unit this year.’’

To thank staff for their hard work and dedication Rebecca and Sam recently ran the Manchester half-marathon and raised more than £900 for the hospital charity.

Rebecca said: “We wanted to do something to thank the staff for the support and expertise they provided during a difficult and challenging time.

“We will always show our support to such amazing people who are doing more than just their job.’’

Rachel Grice, Neonatal Unit Manager, said: “It is lovely to see that Lucas is doing so well and on behalf of every member of the staff on the unit I want to wish him and his family the happiest of Christmases.’’
