Blyth Spartans v Southport Preview

Southport take to the road again on Saturday with a trip to Blyth for what is our longest trip of the season in the region of a 340 mile round trip.

Southport are in buoyant mood at the moment, unbeaten in ten games in all competitions, a run that has seen a rise up the table from 22nd into 7th place and a place in the play offs. There is an imbalance in games played throughout the league but most sides have actually played a game more than Southport.

A win on Saturday will cement that 7th place.

Whilst Blyth are on a poor run of form which saw the departure of manager Michael Nelson on November 17th, Saturday’s game will be the first at home for new man in the hot seat Terry Mitchell who left Consett to take on the Blyth job. Mitchell’s first game couldn’t have been much harder with a trip to AFC Fylde where they suffered a 4-1 defeat. The “new manager syndrome” with players eager to impress the new boss will put Southport on their guard. The last home outing saw them pick up a 1-0 win under the interim manager.

Liam will be casting his eye over the squad and checking out any injuries at training this evening before deciding who will be in the starting eleven on Saturday. It is hoped Jack Doyle will be fit again after his illness.

With Marcus Carver in tremendous scoring form and three clean sheets in the last three league games Southport are getting it right at both ends of the pitch at present.
