Liverpool City Region to host The Open at least three times by 2050
Liverpool City Region, Sefton and Wirral have agreed with The R&A to host The Open at least three times by 2050. The partnership is expected to support tourism, jobs and local businesses, with the 154th championship at Royal Birkdale forecast to bring a £200 million boost. A formal agreement is due later this year.

Coram Beanstalk seeks Southport volunteers to support children’s reading
Coram Beanstalk is seeking Southport volunteers, particularly around Meols Cop, Churchtown, High Park and the PR9 postcode area, to support children’s reading in local schools. Helpers receive training and ongoing support, then work with an average of three children for 20–30 minutes at least weekly, helping build confidence and reading enjoyment.

Ryan Fox wins The Open by one shot at Royal Birkdale
New Zealander Ryan Fox won the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale by one shot, finishing 10 under after a final-round 68. He recovered from two back-nine bogeys, then birdied the 16th and 18th holes to finish ahead of Cameron Young and claim his first major title.

Kevin Keegan dies aged 75 after revealing stage four cancer
Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has died aged 75, seven weeks after revealing he had stage four cancer. His family said he died surrounded by his wife and daughters. Keegan won two Ballon d’Or awards, enjoyed major success with Liverpool and later managed Newcastle, Fulham, England and Manchester City.

The Open at Royal Birkdale sets attendance record with 306,000
Royal Birkdale’s 154th championship attracted an official attendance of 306,000, a new record. The tournament ran from 12 to 19 July, with championship play from 16 to 19 July. It was the venue’s 11th time hosting the event, which Ryan Fox won by one shot with a birdie on the 18th.
