Residents are being asked to avoid garden fires during warm weather because flames can spread quickly and smoke may affect neighbours. Household waste should be recycled, composted or taken to a recycling centre. Anyone facing an out-of-control fire should move away and call 999, while disposable barbecues should not be used in unsuitable outdoor areas.

Southport-born European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer dies aged 78
The Southport-born goalkeeper won European Cup medals with Manchester United and Aston Villa, though he was not on the pitch at either final whistle. He played a key role in Villa’s successful 1981–82 campaign, making 287 league and cup appearances for the club before later returning to Swansea City and working as a coach.

Electric vehicle sales rise 45% as government reviews ZEV mandate
The government has launched a consultation on targets supporting the transition away from new petrol and diesel cars. It follows a 45% annual rise in electric vehicle sales, with more than one in four new cars now electric. Industry and communities can submit views on the pathway through 23 October 2026.
