  2. Southport-born European Cup winner Jimmy Rimmer dies aged 78

    The Southport-born goalkeeper won European Cup medals with Manchester United and Aston Villa, though he was not on the pitch at either final whistle. He played a key role in Villa’s successful 1981–82 campaign, making 287 league and cup appearances for the club before later returning to Swansea City and working as a coach.
