Southport and Formby cancer support service cuts approved by local doctors
Local doctors have approved a 70% staffing reduction at the Macmillan Cancer Network in Southport and Formby, despite objections from patients and councillors. The changes will begin next financial year, while Sefton’s Council Health Scrutiny Committee is due to examine the decision in the autumn.

Police renew appeal to identify woman found dead in a bin bag in Stanley Park
Merseyside Police are continuing efforts to identify a woman found inside a black bin bag in Stanley Park on 28 August. She is believed to have been in her 70s. Enquiries, forensic work and CCTV checks continue, with officers appealing for information, footage and reports of missing people.

Two fire engines attend vehicle fire at The Gravel
Fire crews from Ormskirk and Southport attended a large vehicle fire at The Gravel, Mere Brow, near Tarleton, at 4.25am on Saturday, 29 August. Firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the blaze and remained at the scene for approximately two hours.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue asks residents to shape 2027–2032 plan
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is consulting residents and workers on risks for its 2027–2032 Community Risk Management Plan, including flooding, wildfires, road collisions and water rescues. The online survey closes at 5pm on 9 October 2026. Southport is served by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
