Raw sewage discharged along Fylde Coast for more than 35 hours
United Utilities has been fined £900,000 and ordered to pay £62,225 in prosecution costs after admitting five permit offences linked to sewage discharges along the Fylde Coast in June 2023. The incident affected bathing waters, shellfish beds, tourism and local businesses, with total fines and costs reaching £964,225.

Southport beat Morecambe 2-1 at Haig Avenue
Southport secured a much-needed 2-1 victory over Morecambe at Haig Avenue, ending a run of three defeats. Adam Moseley opened the scoring before Elliot Newby equalised late on, but substitute Daniel Ogwuru headed the decisive goal three minutes later. The attendance was 2,003.

Sefton residents offered support through local dementia services
Sefton Council is highlighting support available during World Alzheimer’s Month, including dementia cafés, support groups, advocacy, safeguarding services and activities that help people stay connected. The council also works with the Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia, families, friends and unpaid carers across the borough.

Record 3,456 children join Sefton Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge
A record 3,456 children joined Sefton Libraries’ music-themed Read to the Beat Summer Reading Challenge, surpassing last year’s 3,100 sign-ups. The programme used books, activities and events to encourage reading during the holidays. Southport will also host the free Books Alive! children’s festival during October half term.

Sefton Council promotes water safety event with emergency services
Residents and businesses can attend a free water safety awareness session at Crosby Marine Lake from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 12 September. Emergency services will share safety advice and simple first aid skills, while representatives from Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, HM Coastguard and St John Ambulance attend.
