Buxton 1 Southport 0

sfc crest badge

Southport's first visit to Buxton in over 30 years ended in defeat as the home side completed a double over an out of sorts Southport.

It was goalless at half time largely down to some fine goalkeeping by Tony McMillan with three fine saves keeping the scores level at the break, Southport’s only chance of any note was an effort from the edge of the box by Michael Carberry.

Ironically the visitors played better in the second period and created a few openings, the best falling to Jack Bainbridge in the 76th minute but he fired wide of the goal when well placed.

Typically Buxton went up the other end and took the lead. It looked like a handball in the build up but it wasn’t seen by the referee and as the Southport players seemed to stop for a split second Diego De Girolamo made space in the area and fired home to give the home side the lead. Bainbridge was booked for his protests as frustrations boiled over

It was an off day for the visitors and whilst there were a few chances created and you couldn’t fault the effort, as we have come to expect, the end product was lacking.
