Conservative Calls for Children’s A&E to Return to Southport Hospital Supported by Sefton Council
At last night’s council meeting at Southport Town Hall, local councillors unanimously supported Conservative calls to see Children’s A&E return to Southport Hospital.
Southport has not had emergency services for children at Southport Hospital for over 20 years and there have been longstanding calls for them to return. In a rare outbreak of unity, Sefton Council supported a motion, with an amendment, from Conservative Group Leader, Mike Prendergast, for the service to be reinstated and brought back to Southport.
Councillor Prendergast said, “I’m really pleased that we saw cross party support for bringing back Children’s A&E to Southport, the current consultation exercise by the local NHS is an opportunity for this to happen and it’s really important that the council spoke with one voice on this issue.”
“We will need to wait and see the proposals put forward but the fact that we have all political parties in Southport and across Sefton supporting this will carry significant weight and makes it clear that this is a priority for all elected representatives across Southport and Sefton.”
“Southport is a large town and it is unacceptable to maintain the current situation where the nearest Children’s Emergency Services for Southport families are based in Ormskirk and between midnight and 8am are based in Liverpool, around 45 minutes away.”
“We will find out in the New Year the proposals being put forward by the local NHS and there will be a further consultation on those and I am genuinely hopeful that the outcome will be positive for Southport.”
