Council issue letter after some residents of Blundellsands encourage their dogs to foul the area

Your local councillors have brought to our attention that dog/s are being actively encouraged to use the highway as a toilet and the owners are then taking no measures to clear up and clean after their pets.

I wish to point out to you that Sefton has re-introduced it’s Public Spaces Protection Order (dog control) which is aimed at reducing irresponsible dog ownership by, amongst other things, penalising those who permit their dogs to foul and then don’t clear up.

Irresponsible dog owners are making our communities less pleasant to live in and are giving responsible dog owners a bad name. Furthermore, dog faeces contributes to a number of anti-social and public health complaints made to the Highways & Public Protection Service.

  • During warm dry days it smells more
  • It attracts flies to eat and lay eggs in
  • It lowers expectations of other neighbours who fly-tip their waste in the area
  • It potentially leads to an increase in rats as they are searching through these areas for food and shelter attracted by the smells from this waste
  • It also creates additional hazards for our cleansing operatives who are required to clear the highways on a regular basis

Enforcement Officers are patrolling streets in your area and will issue Fixed Penalty Notices to people who allow their dogs to foul and then refuse to pick it up.

If you notice dog fouling has been left on the footpath then you can notify us of its presence using the link below. This information is referred to Cleansing on a monthly basis to prioritise the most heavily affected streets, so they can most effectively use their limited resources.

It is also possible to give us details which we are able to use to identify the culprit on this self-service page. Either a description of the person and dog to refer to the enforcement team who will issue a Fixed Penalty Notice if witnessed.

If the address of the offender is known then we are able to send them a warning that they are liable to get a fixed penalty notice, or with more substantiative evidence we could directly send the person a fixed penalty notice.

Your local councillors and I look forward to your co-operation in the resolution of this matter.
