Council working hard to get Southport Splash World reopened

Sefton Council is working hard to ensure Dunes Splashworld, Southport is reopen as soon as possible for its communities and visitors to once again enjoy.

The water park was temporarily closed in December 2019 in order for the building to undergo essential remedial works but were unfortunately set back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this time Splashworld was temporarily adapted as a specialist SMART testing unit for COVID-19, playing a pivotal role in keeping residents and key workers safe from potential infection.

Now, as Sefton Council looks to boost all aspects of the economy as it recovers from the impact of the pandemic, remedial works are set to resume at Splashworld.

These works will include permanently addressing a number of latent defects that had been found following inspections by Sefton’s in-house teams.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “All our leisure centres have been considerably impacted by the pandemic, as has the wider leisure industry, and Sefton remains committed to doing all we can to regenerate our economy over the coming months and years.

“Progress on the original round of works at Splashworld were unfortunately set back in 2020, although we recognise just how vital a role the building played and continues to play as a COVID-19 SMART testing centre.

“Now, as we look to the immediate future, our current priority is to address the essential repairs required in order for us to reopen the centre as soon as possible for thousands of visitors to enjoy.

“Once these works have been carried out, we will then look to revisit our hopes for a wider regeneration of the Dunes Splashworld offer, along with other exciting projects set to take place in the wider Southport area.”
