Duke Street Park in Formby gets new path and wildlife mural

A popular park in Sefton has seen the first in a list of planned improvements completed with the introduction of a new pedestrian path and school-inspired mural. 

Duke Street Park in Formby is in line for an uplift orchestrated by Sefton Council, local councillors and Formby Parish Council.

Grand plans 

A new path in the park, which runs parallel to Duke Street, has widened the walking route to improve ease and safety for park visitors. 

It is due to be followed by a raft of changes, including a nature trail which will host features such as ‘bug hotels’, habitats which offer a major boost to biodiversity. 

Art students at Formby High have teamed up with local artist Holly Bushnell to introduce a colourful art installation on the park’s changing room building. The lively piece celebrates the natural beauty of the area, highlighting the wildlife populating green spaces and the nearby coast. 

There are also plans to introduce new equipment to the park’s play area, offering an even wider range of activities for young visitors to enjoy. 

Upgraded CCTV in the park will also provide greater security for all users. 

Funds raised 

Part of the investment into these improvements comes from Section 106 funds allocated to Green Sefton. The funding, resulting from the development of the Pinewood Park housing development, has already led to significant upgrades to Alt Road Park's play area. 

Additionally, Formby West and Formby East councillors have dipped into their ward budgets to help towards uplifting the park, while Formby Parish Council have made a contribution. 

Local volunteers, who play an instrumental role in the upkeep of the park, also assisted with developing plans for the improvements. 

Councillor Joanne Williams, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Parks are a precious resource for Sefton, both as a place for people to meet and stay active, and as an important part of our natural landscape. 

“I’m delighted that Duke Street Park, which is such an important part of Formby, is getting these improvements which are sure to be a big hit with residents and visitors. 

“It is great that the Section 106 money secured from the Pinewood Park development has allowed some really exciting improvements to take place both here and at Alt Road Park, ensuring that local people feel the benefits."
