Man arrested after knife incident at Southport flats
A 31-year-old man has been arrested after police were called to reports of threats and a concern for safety at a flat on Avondale Road, Southport.
North West Ambulance Service contacted officers at around 5.45pm on Wednesday 2 September 2026. The man, who is in his 30s, was reported to be acting erratically and making threats.
Emergency services attended the building. A cordon was put in place and other residents were evacuated as a precaution.
Police said the man continued to act aggressively and later entered the communal area carrying a large kitchen knife. Officers forced entry into the flat and brought the incident to a safe conclusion.
The man, from Southport, was arrested on suspicion of affray. He was taken to hospital to be checked over and remains there under the supervision of officers.
Superintendent Col Rooney said: “I want to commend the officers who were involved after they were faced with an incredibly challenging incident.
“Thanks to their decisive and brave actions, the suspect was detained and no one was harmed. Our officers were able to protect both residents and paramedics who attended the flat.
“I would also like to thank residents who were asked to leave their flat while we dealt with the individual. Your patience was appreciated while officers brought the incident to a safe conclusion.”
