Southport exhibition explores Sefton’s historic link with Mons

A famous painting linked to one of the most remarkable stories of the First World War is now on display at The Atkinson in Southport, helping visitors discover a special connection between Sefton and the Belgian city of Mons.

The Angels of Mons, painted by artist Marcel Gillis, is part of the Atkinson Art Gallery Collection and is featured in a new exhibition that explores the legend of the “Angels of Mons”.

The legend began during the Battle of Mons in Belgium in August 1914. Stories spread that British soldiers, facing great danger, were protected by mysterious angelic figures or ghostly archers led by Saint George. The tale gave hope to many people during the dark early days of the war.

Although the story was inspired by a fictional short story calledThe Bowmenby writer Arthur Machen, many people came to believe the events were real. The legend quickly became one of the best-known wartime stories in Britain.

Cllr Liz Dowd, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture and Libraries, said:

“This painting is significant because it captures the power of belief, hope and imagination during wartime.

“And for local residents, the exhibition has an extra meaning as Sefton has been twinned with Mons since 1964, creating a long-standing friendship between the two communities”.

The exhibition has been created in partnership with the Mons Memorial Museum and celebrates the shared history between the two places. It reminds visitors that people often look for comfort and courage when facing difficult times. And it explores how stories and symbols can shape the way people understand war.

Visitors to The Atkinson can learn about the battle, the legend and the lasting links between Sefton and Mons. Through the painting and other displays, the exhibition encourages people to think about how stories can bring communities together, even across different countries.

TheAngels of Monsexhibition, which is on until Saturday 17th October, is free to visit. It offers a unique chance to explore a historic tale that continues to connect Sefton with its friends in Belgium more than 100 years later.
