Damien Moore comment on the demise of Southport Pier

closed

I am extremely disappointed that Sefton Council must keep Southport Pier closed on health and safety grounds for the foreseeable future, including the summer holiday period, and with no reopening date in sight.

It is clear that more maintenance works were required before the harsh weather hit in December 2022, and it is unacceptable that Sefton Council neglected to do so. I will continue working to secure more funding for the Pier, as a major part of Southport’s tourist economy, and have already written to the Levelling Up Minister to make the strong case for it.

I will also continue working with local businesses to support them at this difficult time, and urge anyone affected to not only write to the Council to make clear their dissatisfaction, but to my office too, and we will do everything we can do help.

Sefton Council must do everything they can to ensure that this vital part of our town and community is reopened as soon as possible, and must not wash their hands of their responsibility for it.
