Damien Moore MP for Southport has been sanctioned by Russian Government.
Damien Moore MP has today been sanctioned by the Russian Government, in addition to 265 of his serving Parliamentary colleagues.
Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made clear in its statement that these “personal restrictions” are for those who “took the most active part” in the UK’s decision on 11th March 2022 to sanction 386 Members of the Russian Parliament, following Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
These sanctions prevent Mr. Moore, who has no Russian assets nor business in Russia, from visiting Russia.
In January, Mr. Moore spoke in a debate on Russia’s grand strategy to urge the UK to become less reliant on Russian energy exports and to think carefully about how best to combat Russian cyber operations.
In the days following Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, Mr. Moore signed the Ukraine book of solidarity in Parliament, and wrote to the local Council to ask for the Ukrainian flag to be flown from Southport Town Hall, an ask in which he was successful.
Mr. Moore has also helped secure visas for several dozen Ukrainian’s fleeing the war, and will continue working hard to provide legal entry to the UK to those who need it.
Damien Moore, MP for Southport, said:
“I am delighted that, along with 265 serving Parliamentary colleagues, I have been placed on a Russian sanctions list.
“I remain appalled by the actions of the Putin regime, and am pleased to see that my opposition to it has been deemed a significant enough threat against Putin to warrant his introducing these personal sanctions against me.
“We have seen before how Putin seeks to silence any voice against him, even in the United Kingdom, but thankfully such tactics will not work in the democratic and free House of Commons.
“I will continue to stand steadfast in my support of Ukraine and my opposition to Putin.”
The Rt. Hon Boris Johnson MP, The Prime Minister, said:
“It is no disrespect to those who have not been sanctioned when I say that all those 287 should regard it as a badge of honour.
“What we will do is keep up our robust and principled support for the Ukrainian people and for their right to protect their lives and families, and to defend themselves.
“That is what this country is doing and it has the overwhelming support of the whole House.”
