Damien Moore MP opens the new season at Southport Bowling Club.
Damien Moore, MP for Southport, on Saturday met with the President of Southport Bowling Club, Jane Bowden, along with players of the Club, to officially open the new season, which runs until September.
Mr. Moore also took part in the first bowl of the season, playing alongside members and the officers of the club.
Mr. Moore met with Club Members to discuss their plans for the new season, such as “Bowling for Health”, where everyone from newcomers up is welcome to come and learn the basics of bowls in fun and friendly group sessions, and “Patrons Day for the ladies of Lancashire”, which gets new bowlers and veterans together for a charitable game, followed by tea and cake. A fundraiser was also held to raise money for Ukraine, with members raising £350.
These events follow on from the Club’s recent refurbishment of its facilities, with a large clubroom with adjacent changing and locker facilities providing everything needed for a fully mixed club with a reputation for being friendly and social.
Southport Bowling Club, the only Flat Green Bowling Club in the Southport and Liverpool area, has been operating since 1937, with its players representing the Club in both County and National competitions.
Damien Moore, MP for Southport, said:
“It is a real privilege to have such a distinguished bowling team right here in Southport, to which players come from far further afield than Southport to play.
“With the last two seasons disrupted by Covid, it was fantastic to have the honour of opening the 2022 season and playing in the first bowl alongside some of the Club’s top players.
“The President and others have done such a great job organising the Club’s refurbishment, ensuring the Club remains a vibrant and welcoming place as it enters its 86th year since its foundation.
“Southport Bowling is unsurprisingly a very friendly and welcoming Club, and I would encourage anyone with an interest in finding out more to go down to one of their sessions to meet with Members and try their hand at this fanatic sport.”
Jane Bowden, President of Southport Bowling Club, said:
“It was great to have our local MP, Damien Moore, open the season, and even take part in the first bowl. It was a delight for him to present a bottle to the winner.
“Following our club’s refurbishment, we are back and better than ever, with some fantastic new facilities, and it was great to have Damien’s support for this successful campaign.
“I’m also delighted that, due to the generosity of Club Members, we were able to raise £350 on the day to support Ukraine at this desperate time.
“I am so excited that the season is now open, and look forward to welcoming old and new Members back for what should be a fantastic summer of bowling.”
