Call for a new strategy

Liberal Democrats are continuing to demand Sefton re-think their non-policy on Southport beach as councillors outside the ruling Labour group have grown frustrated by what Sefton opposition leader, John Pugh, calls a “do-nothing strategy”. 

The acknowledged deterioration of the leisure beach south of the Pier through silt, grass and mud has been greeted with fatalism. Opposition councillors were told during the last full Council meeting that conservation bodies like Natural England would prohibit any remedial action and that in any case all remedies would fail or fail to permanently address the decline. They were urged to celebrate the greenery.

What is not understood is that Southport still has an excellent beach with bags of potential for leisure and healthy activity. It’s just moved. At the end of the Pier are acres of golden sand- huge amenity space for families, children and dogs BUT you have to wade through nasty, slippery mud to get there.  

To underline this point councillors Pugh and Sammon have released a reel showing the stunning beauty of the Southport shoreline. 

Ideally it could be accessed from the end of the Pier, but sadly the Council cannot find the money to reopen it and bars the public from it.

Pugh and Sammon are arguing that any Pier refurbishment should enable access off the end of the Pier onto the beach and a new strategy for beach access be devised. 

“90% of people don’t know what a glorious place Southport beach can be,” says Cllr Pugh. “ My worry is though that the Council doesn’t either. A new £72M conference centre and associated fountains will be wonderful, but we have a truly. wonderful piece of nature here. It’s free too. It’s just not accessible and the bit of the beach that is is not usable. Sefton hasn’t got a coherent strategy and fails to appreciate how the Pier fits into it. “
