Disgraceful scenes as Southport lose 5-0 at Chester
Disgraceful scenes at Chester as Southport slumped to their worst defeat of the season.
Roared on by a large following of fans the Port were totally outplayed by Chester.
The events on the pitch were overshadowed by a small section of Southport supporters throwing smoke bombs some of which landed on the side of the pitch causing the referee to pause the match.
Southport fell to a second defeat in a row after a 5-0 thumping at Chester.
A disappointing afternoon all round as the visitors never got going against a determined Chester side who fielded five former Sandgrounders in the starting line up.
Southport rarely created anything throughout the whole 90 minutes and if we are honest it could easily have finished 7 or 8-0 with too many players having an off day.
At 1-0 at half time and playing with the wind at our backs we were hoping for a reaction to a poor first half and it never came. It was a surprise that it took Chester until the 30th minute to break the deadlock having dominated the opening period and it took a thunderbolt of a strike from Burke to open the scoring with an unstoppable shot.
Goals in the 51st (Dackers) and 55th minutes (Stephenson) put the game out of Southport’s reach.
Chester Man Of The Match Declan Weeks, who was superb all afternoon, added a fourth on 70 minutes before Apter made it 5-0 on 76 minutes and Chester were rampant and had three great chances to rub further salt in the wounds.
Tyler Walton and Jordan Archer did have a couple of late chances to pull a goal back but it was too little too late.
Southport will now need to dust themselves down and go again at Telford on Tuesday.
