Drive continues for better Birkdale Village in Southport breathing
Local Birkdale councillors are continuing their drive to improve air quality in Birkdale village despite Sefton Council refusing to put pressure on bus operators.
Research show that carcinogenic fumes from stationary vehicles with engines idling pose far more of a threat to the health that passing vehicles and at least four times an hour long queues of vehicles stand with engines idling in the village.
“This poses a significant threat to the health of shoppers and shop workers which is massively increased by the explosion of pavement cafes. "
A recent proposal by Lib Dem Councillor,Simon Shaw to ask the City Region Mayor to put pressure on bus operators to oblige driver to switch their engines off when at the crossing gates was rejected by the ruling Labour administration at the last full Sefton Council meeting.
“The reasons for this mystify me”, said Cllr Shaw. “ All parties share the ambition to have a cleaner environment but that should not deter us or anyone else from demanding better and we will be writing directly to the transport authorities anyway.

Signage encouraging the private motorist to switch off too will help particularly with older cars that don’t automatically do so."
