Eight more people arrested, charged and sentenced for violent disorder in Southport and Liverpool

Detectives have arrested and charged more people in connection with violent disorder in Southport and Liverpool in the Summer.

A 48-year-old Walton man was arrested yesterday, Thursday 18 December on suspicion of violent disorder, arson, and burglary on County Road. He is alleged to have set fire to bins which were then pushed towards police and used to block the road preventing the police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service getting to the Spellow Hub when it was on fire. He is also alleged to have stolen items from Liver Mini Market the same evening. He has been conditionally bailed.

A 25-year-old man from Southport was arrested on Tuesday 17 December, on suspicion of violent disorder in Southport.

The suspect is alleged to have thrown missiles towards police and in the direction of the mosque on Sussex Road. He is also alleged to have lit paper next to a damaged police vehicle which was burnt out. When arrested the man was also found to be in possession of a controlled drug. He has been conditionally bailed.

A 21-year-old from Birkdale was arrested on Tuesday 17 December on suspicion of violent disorder in Southport. He has been released under investigation.

A 14-year-old boy from the Wirral was charged on 18 December with violent disorder in Liverpool and will appear at Liverpool’s Youth Court in January.

A 33-year-old man, Peter Fairhurst from Wigan, was charged on 18 December with violent disorder in Southport and will appear in court in January.

A 16-year-old boy from Birkenhead was sentenced at Liverpool Youth Court yesterday on Tuesday 16 December for violent disorder in Liverpool. He received a 12-month Referral Order and was instructed to pay court costs and compensation.

A 17-year-old boy from Southport was charged, on 17 December, with violent disorder in Southport and possession of a class B controlled drug attended Liverpool Youth Court and will be sentenced in January 2025.

A 16-year-old boy from Ainsdale also appeared at Liverpool Youth Court on Tuesday 16 December charged with violent disorder and burglary in Southport. He will also be sentenced in January after pleading guilty.

Detective Inspector Paula Jones said: “These latest outcomes demonstrate our determination to put before the courts anyone suspected of bringing shame to the region over the summer, many of whom travelled to Merseyside from other areas.

“We will not stop until we’ve put everyone we possibly can before the courts and continue to review footage and information to do this.”

The total number of people arrested by Merseyside Police has now reached 162, with 114 charged and 87 sentenced.”
