Man dies after train collides with van at Burscough level crossing

A man has died after a train collided with a van at Martins Lane Crossing in Burscough.

The crash happened shortly after 3pm on Saturday, August 29. British Transport Police said officers were called at 3.18pm after reports that a train had struck a van.

One man was in the van and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers on the train were treated for minor injuries.

The train was the 3.03pm service from Manchester Oxford Road to Southport, which travels through Wigan Wallgate. Paramedics and fire crews also attended the crossing.

British Transport Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious. A spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened."

Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to officers is asked to text British Transport Police on 61016, quoting reference 373 of 29 August.
