Five star Southport batter Boston in first match of the season

An amazing afternoon at The Jakemans Community Stadium saw Southport come away with a 5-3 win, a result not many predicted ahead of the game against one of the favourites for the title.

After a shaky start with the visitors looking a bit shaky in the opening 10 minutes, Southport went goal crazy with three first half goals.

After a lengthy debate the opening goal has officially been awarded to Connor Woods who fired in from an acute angle. At the time and from distance it did look as though Jordan Archer had got on the end of the cross to finish but Jordan was very honest and denied himself a hat-trick by giving Connor the goal.

Archer was not to be denied and two quick fire goals before the break saw Southport in dreamland and into the break with a 3-0 lead.

We expected the home side to come out firing on all cylinders in the second period but a 49th minute shot from the edge of the area by Dylan Vassallo saw a 4-0 lead and it got better in the 57th minute with a superb team goal that saw Jack Doyle get on the end of a Tyler Walton cross to finish from close range.

The visiting supporters in the crowd of 1575 could hardly believe what was happening with Southport cruising and threatening every time they went forward.

Boston did come back with three late goals as Southport tired and made a few changes but such was the lead the lapses could be forgiven and a win on the road on the opening day doesn’t get much better and was celebrated with the travelling contingent.
