Gloucester City v Southport Preview
make the trip to another “Northern Outpost” on Saturday as we head down the M6 and M5 to Gloucester!
Southport are in a buoyant mood at present, unbeaten in 12 league games conceding just one goal in the last seven league matches and manager Liam Watson remains adamant that one didn’t cross the line!
It will be our first taste of football on a 4G pitch this season and it will be a new test for our lads. They are well used to training on a similar surface at JMO Sports and Liam and Terry will have them well prepared.
Tuesday nights fantastic last gasp win kept the momentum going with Jordan Archer grabbing the late late goal and sent everyone home in a great mood.
The Gloucester stadium has been totally rebuilt since our only visit in 2003 (the other game away was played at Cirencester) following the dreadful flooding the club experienced in 2007 which saw the ground submerged in water. I’m not sure (for all those who count the grounds visited) if this counts as a new ground?
Gloucester are the first team we play twice this season having opened the season on day one with a 2-2 draw. They were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion, seeing them currently sitting in 18th place is a real surprise. The first home game saw a resounding 4-0 win against York City but it has been a rocky ride since then with the only wins coming at home to Farsley and Spennymoor and an away victory at Leamington but they have only lost once in their last six matches and have kept clean sheets in their last three home games.
