HM Coastguard Southport involved in mud rescue on Crosby Beach

Tasked by colleagues at Holyhead MRCC to assist our flank team HM Coastguard Crosby with a person stuck in mud, north of Crosby’s Coastguard Station.

On arrival we could see the casualty was nearly thigh deep, and around 200m from shore. The incident became time critical as the tide was turning, and beginning to flood.

The situation was assessed further and assistance from RNLI Hoylake Lifeboat Station’s hovercraft requested, and at the same time two mud technicians were sent out on foot, where they began work extracting the casualty.

The casualty was released from the mud, who (along with the mud techs) was then carried back to the slipway in the hovercraft, and then transferred to the Coastguard Station to get warm, get clean, and have a checkup from a North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) Paramedic before being free to head home.

It’s worth noting that the casualty was aware of the hazards on the beach, but was caught out on this occasion. The casualty also knew to stay still, and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. There is no doubt that these actions prevented sinking further into the mud, and assisted in a quick rescue.
