King Street Opens to One-Way Traffic Amid Town Centre Renovations

King Street opens to one way traffic as works on Les Transformations de Southport phase 1 enter the last few months. This is to allow works to be completed on the junction of King Street and Market Street.
The junction of Market Street and King Street will be shut on Monday 22ndSeptember. The junction will reopen from Tuesday 23rd September, and King Street will then be temporarily open for one way traffic for four weeks. This is while Market Street (between Lord Street and King Street) is closed to allow the next section of works to take place.
The scheme
The works in the area are part of a wider Southport town centre improvement project, which is part of the Southport Town Deal. The scheme has seen Market Street pedestrianised with outdoor seating and planned planting in the autumn, with rain gardens, trees and moveable planters to maintain access for emergency vehicles.
Councillor Paulette Lappin, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, said: “The area will benefit from these improvements, which has transformed a busy road to a welcoming pedestrianised space. The improvements will encourage more visitors to spend longer in the area. It was great to see the Coastal Jam festival there last weekend and to see the area being used as intended.”
Next phase of works
Work starts on adding in the bus shelters on Eastbank Street and the site is being prepared for the drainage for rain gardens and permeable paving.
The streetlighting column by Subway will be connected to power and paving works have started on King Street.
Work on the King Street/Market Street junction continues as a phased approach, and will temporarilyclose to traffic, with a clear diversion route being marked.
Cllr Lappin continued: “It is an exciting time for Southport and we invite the public to continue to visit the area during the works to support the local businesses and watch how the improvements are taking shape.”
