Ahead of this week’s Spring Statement from the Chancellor, Southport Lib Dems are calling for the Labour Government to give people some hope, not just a list of cuts.

Erin Harvey, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Southport Liberal Democrats, commented: “In December, Keir Starmer said that British people would have more money in their pockets as a result of Labour's growth plans, yet the PM and Chancellor's choices in Government have so far left people worse off.

"People are fed up. Many older people have endured a cold winter and disabled people are feeling fearful about what the Labour Government’s cuts to disability benefits mean for them. Employers are also bracing themselves for Labour’s job tax to come into force in a week or so, council taxes are going up and general cost of living remains high. In our town, many much loved businesses have closed. These have all been the result of Labour's political choices.

“This is all happening against the backdrop of stagnant economic growth, from a Labour Government that promised change. People need hope, and the Chancellor’s focus should be less on fiscal rules and more on how this growth can be unlocked to kickstart our economy.”

“R&D spending and support to make the UK a science superpower, more funding to help create jobs and green infrastructure and more focus on helping upskill people to be ready for the jobs of tomorrow. These are the kind of things that people in Southport want and need to hear about. The response we need now  is hope, ambition and investment, not a list of endless cuts.”
