Labour green investment u-turn is “bad news” for Southport’s future says Lib
Dem candidate

Southport Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Erin Harvey believes that the recent u-
turn by Keir Starmer on his party’s green prosperity plan is bad news for Southport’s
economic and social future.

Last week Keir Starmer abandoned Labour party plans to spend £28 bn a year on
green investment if elected. The figure will now be under £15 bn and only a third of
this would be new money.

Erin commented: “We have known for a while that the Tories have abandoned even
the pretence of caring about green investment following the PM’s rowback on key
policies last year. Now we can see that Labour have clearly signalled that green
investment and climate change are not going to be a priority to them.

“This is bad news for our town. Beyond the headlines of this being a PR disaster for
the Labour party is a much more serious point about the failure of both parties to
understand the need for investment in green infrastructure for the economy and also
to keep down household and business energy bills.

“Southport sits on the coast so we are exposed to the threats of climate change but
also perfectly placed to be part of the economic opportunities that exist in a net zero
economy, harnessing our natural advantages. Our town could be a leader in coastal
energy but it needs to be backed up by strategy, investment and vision.

“Labour have now proved that they won’t put their money where their mouth is and
that putting towns like ours in the best position to benefit from the energy transition is
not a priority.”
