A man has been jailed for 15 months for a serious assault following an incident in Southport.

Jacob Hutchingson, 30, of Nineveh Gardens, in Leeds, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today (Friday 20 March) after pleading guilty to Section 18 – grievous bodily harm with intent and Section 18 – wounding with intent.

On Sunday 6 April 2025, Hutchingson seriously assaulted a man aged in his 30s by knocking him unconscious and stamping on his ankle and stomach.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment for a broken ankle and other injuries.

Following CCTV inquiries and an appeal publicised by Merseyside Police, we were able to identify a suspect and Hutchingson was arrested.

In a Victim Personal Statement, the man who was assaulted reflects on his recovery and the lasting impact it has had on him. He said in the VPS: “I was not confident going out by myself when I was on crutches and it took several months to try and get that confidence back. I was scared to bump into my attacker, unable to remember their face so every male that looked at me I thought it was him. I am still worried going out with my friends into Southport day and night.”

Detective Constable Immy Mahmood said: “This was a nasty assault that left a man in hospital with serious injuries.

“It’s only right that Hutchingson is now spending time in prison when I hope he will reflect on his appalling actions during this night.”
