Man arrested following serious collision in Rufford near Southport
Police are appealing for information following a collision in Rufford which has left a cyclist with serious injuries.
The incident occurred at around 1.40pm yesterday (Sunday, April 3rd) when a Renault Clio and a cyclist were travelling in the same direction along Red Cat Lane, towards Curlew Lane.
The cyclist – a man aged in his 70s – was taken to hospital by air ambulance with several broken bones and fractures. His injuries are described as potentially life-changing.
Two passengers in the Clio – girls aged 11 – suffered minor injuries.
The road was closed for around three hours while collision investigators attended.
A 32-year-old man from Skelmersdale was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving – excess drugs, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drug. He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
We are now asking anybody who witnessed the collision, or either of the vehicles in the moments before it happened, to get in touch.
Sgt Peter Snook, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations team, said: “This was a nasty collision which left a cyclist in hospital with serious injuries. Our enquiries are very much ongoing to establish exactly what occurred.
“If you have any information that can help us piece together what happened we would ask that you get in touch straight away. Maybe you saw one of both the vehicles in the moments before the collision, or saw the collision itself, or perhaps you have dashcam or CCTV. Whatever information you have, please let us know.”
