Marine 4 Southport 2
The eleven game unbeaten run comes to an end after a 4-2 defeat at The Marine Travel Arena.
Marine opened the scoring after just four minutes after some slick defensive work allowed Josh Wardle all the time in the world to slot the ball home from close range.
Southport drew level in the 30th minute when a long range effort from Teddy Lavelle crept into the corner of the goal (at least we thinks that’s what happened, the sun was blinding us behind the goal at the opposite end of the ground.
Marine wre then awarded a penalty after Aaron Pickles brought down Adam Anson and Sinclair-Smith converted off the inside of the post.
Chris Renshaw kept the score at 2-1 a few minutes later with a great one on one save and it stayed at 2-1 to Marine at the break.
A much more controversial penalty was the awarded to the home side when the referee adjudged a Southport player had handled the ball after it was blasted at him from two yards away. Sinclair-smith stepped up to make 3-1.
The game was all but over in the 66th minute when another defensive lapse allowed Zanzala to slot home and it was 4-1.
Arthur Gnahoua did pull one back in the 73rd minute and to our credit we did keep going until the end but rarely posed any real threat on the home goal.
It was bragging rights to the home fans in a season’s best gate of 2314.
