Martin Mere near Southport is on the search for volunteers this summer

WWT Martin Mere is on the search for volunteers to support a range of summer wildlife activities on our spectacular nature reserve.

We are looking for individuals to join our family over the summer season at our popular 800-acre wetland centre. From assisting with exciting summer activities such as pond dipping to getting hands-on maintaining the stunning reserve, there is something for everyone to get involved in.

“You don’t need expert knowledge to volunteer - just a keen interest in people and wildlife and a ‘can-do’ attitude,” said Nick Brooks, General Manager. “And in return for volunteering, you will get free entry to all WWT Wetland Centres and a 25 per cent discount in the cafe and shop.

“Volunteering at WWT Martin Mere means you will be surrounded by breathtaking nature and an abundance of exciting species such as avocets, lapwings, terns, oystercatchers, and reed buntings. It is a great learning experience, where you will meet new people and develop new skills!”

As the UK’s leading wetland conservation charity, we are dependent on the generosity of donations and the help of volunteers. Without their support, we would be unable to do the work we do to protect and restore wetlands and bring people closer to nature.

Family activities volunteer Dorothy, who has been volunteering for four years, said: “I started volunteering at Martin Mere in 2018, and to say I’m enjoying myself would be an understatement. I’ve gone from being a boring old woman to someone who feels valued and useful. I’ve met some lovely people, and the staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful.”

Visitor services volunteer Pat, who volunteers at Martin Mere once a week, added: “I’ve been volunteering for Martin Mere for about a year. I love learning about the wildlife and getting to know the public, and I have gotten involved with exciting activities such as delivering educational otter talks.

“I’d encourage others to get started volunteering, there are so many different areas you can get involved in, and everyone is really friendly.”
