A much improved performance saw The Sandgrounders return from Gloucester with a well deserved point.

At 2-0 down with 8 minutes to go and on the back of 6 straight defeats in all competitions the writing looked to be on the wall but the lads dug in and in the end could have come away with all three points but for some fine goalkeeping by Zach Jeacock in the home goal.

Southport started the game well but fell behind in the 20th minute when slack defending allowed Danny Wright plenty of space and he crossed for Ben Berefsord to fire home.

Gloucester enjoyed a spell of pressure but even though behind the response was good with Flowers and Hmami going close.

There was plenty of pressure in the second period but no end product and when the home side extended their lead in the 78th minute that looked to be the end of the game. Elliott Durrel who had been on the pitch for only a few minutes with the goal

Gloucester were defending deep to protect the injured ‘keeper and the pressure was piling on and we pulled a goal back through Bennett which went in off the ‘keeper in the 82nd minute.

The point was ours 4 minutes later when Jack Doyle put in a cross and Tyler Walton leapt above the home defence to head home much to the delight of the travelling contingent of fans behind the goal.

The home side announced the MOTM as the goalkeeper who had made several fine saves in a game that looked lost for Southport but ended up with us thinking we could have snatched all 3 points.
