Merseyside Police issue another scam warning to Southport residents

Following a spate of attempted ' courier scam' phone calls in the Southport area  we would like to share another scam we are aware of and that a member of the public managed to avoid this week.

Fraudsters are sending e mails out stating that direct debit payments for Vehicle Excise Duty have not gone through, and provide a link to "confirm bank details".

NEVER CLICK LINKS WITHIN E MAILS IN THIS MANNER.

If you receive a message like this you can check the current status of your MOT and Vehicle Tax on the Government https://orlo.uk/0GIoX site. Type this web address into your browser (don't click the link!) to obtain the genuine government website, and follow the instructions to check the MOT and tax status of your vehicle. If there is a problem with either then try to resolve it via that page and not the fraudulent  email that you will have been sent.

Scammers are quick to pick up on new scams. Copies of the 'Don't Fall For Scam' booklet are available from the Enquiry Office at Southport Police Station and several other Council buildings and Community Groups around Southport.

If you are uncertain about something, wait and ask someone you know and trust to check it with you first.  Report scams to us via 101 or in an emergency, if you feel under threat, on 999.
