MP joins calls for law change to protect cats
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has supported the cross-party parliamentary motion calling for a change in the law that would require drivers to report a traffic collision involving a cat.
The ‘Early Day Motion’, that has been supported by 22 other MPs so far, argues that a traffic collision with a cat should be treated with the same seriousness as a collision with horses, cattle and dogs and that people should have to stop and alert the relevant authorities.
Rosie Cooper MP commented:
“Cats are the second most popular pet in the UK, and to lots of people are an essential part of the family.
“It is heart-breaking to think that a cat can be hit by a car and there is no requirement to seek help or contact the owners.
“This simple change in the law will avoid a lot of the pain and suffering that cats and their owners go through if the unthinkable occurs.”
