The police can confirm a reindeer that escaped from a Christmas attraction in Formby on Saturday (29 November) was safely returned to his owner.

Police received several reports of a reindeer on roads in Formby at about 1.45pm on Saturday.

The animal – called Buddy - was tracked by officers to Formby beach where the search was assisted by Coastguard, National Trust rangers and the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust quad bike team.

He was later found asleep in the dunes at around 7pm, with the help of a police drone and thermal binoculars belonging to The Southport Offshore Rescue.

Later the same evening, a vet supported by the Royal Marines helped contain the reindeer and return him to safety.

Chief Inspector Jacqueline Overy said: “It’s not every day we’re called upon to track a reindeer, but thanks to the co-ordinated efforts of a number of specialist agencies we were able to monitor his movements and locate him in the dunes even as darkness fell.

“The reindeer had posed a genuine risk both to its own safety and the public by entering roads, and it was vital that he was secured.

“We’re extremely grateful to all those who helped bring the situation to a safe conclusion."
