No funding available for Burscough Curves that would have benefited Southport
Following the Department for Transport’s decision not to award funds for the re-opening of the Burscough Curves, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:
“I am really disappointed by the Department for Transport’s decision and don’t agree with their reasoning or this outcome. The proposal made a very persuasive case that the reinstatement of Burscough Curves would have huge benefits, not just for West Lancashire, but Southport, Preston and the surrounding areas.
“I will continue to work with the neighbouring MPs to make further representations to the Ministers. We are certainly not giving up!”
The Burscough Curves were two sections of rail track which connected the Southport to Burscough train line with Preston to the north, and Ormskirk and Liverpool to the South.
Unfortunately this line was axed as part of the Beeching cuts during the 1960s, and ever since Southport residents have overwhelmingly sought their return.
The track meant that Southport residents could commute by train to Preston and Ormskirk – and beyond – without having to make the 15 minute walk to change from Burscough Bridge station to Burscough Junction.
