Ormskirk Junctions Get Safety Boost with New Speed and Red Light Cameras

5

A scheme to improve safety at two junctions in Ormskirk will go live this week, with new cameras being used to detect drivers running red lights and speeding.

The cameras cover the Five Ways junction west of the town centre where the A59 County Road and A570 Southport Road cross and Halsall Lane feeds in, and the nearby junction where Hayfield Road and Green Lane meet the A59 County Road.

They have been installed in response to strong demand from the local community for action to improve safety due to a history of serious incidents.

Over 20 collisions, of which 6 were serious, were recorded during a single 5-year period, with one of the most common causes being failure to comply with the traffic signals.

Offences recorded by the cameras will be reviewed and processed by Lancashire Constabulary. Where motorists are eligible they will be offered a diversionary course as an alternative to prosecution, or a fixed penalty of £100 and 3 penalty points - more serious offences will be registered for court and dealt with by the Magistrates.
