Richie Bennett Leads Scarborough to Narrow Victory Over Southport

match repoer

Southport slip to a 1-0 defeat on an afternoon of very few chances.

It was the 17th scoreless game for The Sandgrounders a record only beaten by Farsley Celtic and in honesty apart from a few half chances the visiting ‘keeper had very little to do.

The only goal of the game came in the 27th minute through former ‘Port player Richie Bennett who scrambled the ball home from close range.

Southport were denied a penalty which everyone in the ground bar the man that mattered, thought was clear cut as Luke Burgess was felled in the box.

The first half was a poor spectacle for the NLD Crowd and whilst the second period saw Southport with plenty of endeavour the cutting edge was lacking.

A bad day got worse when Fin Heath was shown a red card in added time after only coming on as a sub in the 76th minute.

10 minutes of added time were played at the end of the second half but the home side rearely looked like grabbing a late goal and Scarborough were able to see the game out relatively comfortably.

The Southport Brewery Man Of The Match who also receives the Adam Le Roi Trophy and chosen by our Match Sponsors was Aaraon Pickles.
