Riot Police patrolling in Southport this afternoon

There has been a fence erected around the monument. We assume to stop people climbing on it if something was to happen
After this week's tragic events and the subsequent violent disorder in Southport and other towns and cities across the country, Merseyside Police have deployed riot police to Southport town centre. This is purely to reassure the public.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: “We are aware of online speculation surrounding future protests in Merseyside and I want our communities to be assured that we are fully prepared to deal with anyone intent on causing disorder.
