Rise in Targeted High-Value Bike Thefts in Southport

police latest news

Four high value bikes have been stolen from two sheds/garages in shed burglaries in different areas of Southport over the last 7 days. It seems likely that these bikes have been specifically targeted and other high value bikes may be targeted in similar burglaries.
We will be organising more bike marking events over the coming weeks. Watch this space for dates/locations. Frame number registration helps us to return stolen bikes to their rightful owners, but it doesn't stop bikes from being stolen.

Only substantial locks will secure your bikes.
Clearly, there is a need to keep bikes secure, even when left inside sheds/garages.
Use quality padlocks on sheds/garages and make sure there are no other weak points, such as flimsy hasps etc. Criminals will look for weaknesses in your security.
Consider adding a shed alarm/CCTV inside your shed/garage.
Use multiple locks to secure bikes to other heavy or unmoveable items.
Keep bikes covered and not visible through windows.

If you use tracking apps, start and end your ride away from your home address and be wary of sharing rides on apps or social media.
Don't leave bikes visible on car roofs outside your address.
Bike thefts are often reported some time after the theft, with little evidence to follow. If you become aware of a theft in action, always dial 999 so we can respond straight away.
Investigations into the other recent thefts continue.
