Rosie Cooper MP for West Lancs remains wholly against fracking

West Lancashire MP has today reaffirmed her position opposing any and all plans to apply for fracking permits in her constituency and against any fracking nationally. Following the UK’s strict sanctions prohibiting the importing of Russian gas and oil, some have suggested that the need for alternative energy sources will lead to the Government considering fracking.

MP Rosie has consistently campaigned against fracking, and publicly objected to an application for a fracking site in her constituency made to Lancashire County Council by Aurora in 2019. This application was withdrawn in 2020.

Rosie Cooper MP commented:
“The much-needed measures taken to halt the UK’s reliance on Russian oil and gas has of course led to questions around sourcing alternatives. However, I remain wholly against fracking and will oppose any further applications for fracking made in my constituency, as I have always done.

“In 2020 I welcomed fracking firm Aurora’s decision to withdraw their plans to frack in West Lancashire and I stand by my statement that there remains no evidence that fracking can be carried out safely in the UK.

“There is no doubt that the UK needs to take steps to secure alternative energy sources, but the solution cannot and should not be a method that has been shown to cause earthquakes.”
