Sefton Burying Their Heads (in What’s Left of) the Sand say Conservatives on Sefton Council.

Sefton Council are burying their heads in the sand over the state of Southport Beach, say Sefton Conservatives following the recent Sefton Council Meeting.

The shocking state of Southport’s once golden sands has been a growing cause for concern for local residents and businesses for many years. What was once considered the jewel in the crown of Southport’s tourism offering has been left to become overgrown, with little to no maintenance being carried out.

Conservatives on Sefton Council put forward proposals for a public consultation on the condition and future of Southport Beach, with Councillors Mike Prendergast and Tony Brough suggesting that local people should be asked what they think.

Labour councillors, including those representing Southport wards, rejected these calls with some saying that people can go elsewhere if they want to visit a sandy beach.

Conservative Group Leader on Sefton Council, Mike Prendergast, said “Southport’s beach is vital to our local economy, thousands of jobs depend on tourism and Sefton Council simply refuse to even consider any alternative to the ongoing deterioration of our once golden sands.”

“Ongoing natural processes don’t simply mean that you give up with what most people would consider basic maintenance in preserving a relatively small area of leisure beach on our seafront. One of the first steps towards that should be asking the people of Southport what they want to see happen.”

“Labour have made it absolutely clear that they will not change their policy with some of their councillors even suggesting that people can simply go elsewhere if they want to visit a sandy beach. It’s clear that Labour don’t want to hear from the people of Southport.”

Conservative Deputy Leader, Tony Brough, said “Sefton’s failure to change policy and even consider alternative options for Southport Beach, shows an abdication of responsibility from them and a disregard for the people of Southport.”
