Sefton Council accuse Southport MP of "Cheap Stunts" regarding The Pier

Southport MP Damien Moore organised a plane to flyover the seafront this morning towing a banner with "Save Our Pier " on it. It was dismissed as a cheap stunt by Sefton Council.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of the Sefton Labour Group and Sefton Council, said: “It is so disappointing but unsurprising that rather than working with us to find ways to fund the plan we have to restore Southport Pier, Mr Moore is engaging in cheap stunts like this to score political points.

“We have a plan for major work to take place but having been forced to find savings of approaching £250 million in the past decade or so owing to Mr Moore’s Government’s crippling funding cuts, we simply don’t have that kind of money.

“As we said in June, we have started discussions, including with Government departments, about securing funding to re-open the pier but sadly, we are still awaiting any response. Maybe we need to wait for a banner in the sky to tell us what they’re going to do to help?

“I am sure that Mr Moore’s constituents will agree that if he really has any interest in Southport, his time would be better spent encouraging his colleagues to engage with us in a way that benefit the town.”
