Sefton Council Clairifies Misinformation about Southport Pier Project

In her BBC Radio Merseyside interview, Cllr Atkinson confirmed that Sefton Council is indeed “ready to go” with work to refurbish Southport Pier - as soon as it has details of the Government funding for the work, which the Council expects to gain clarity on later this year.
Cllr Atkinson said she thought the work to restore the pier “could take 12 to 14 months to complete” once the funding is secured and that the Council’s contractors could be in place as quickly as six weeks after confirmation of that funding.
She said the work would focus on making the pier stronger structurally but that it would look very similar to what it does now when it reopens.

These comments, which are available to listen back to via BBC Sounds, have been misinterpreted as a claim that work will begin in the coming weeks and that we have the funding to do so. This is not the case.
