Sefton Council remembers Srebrenica with Southport town hall tributes

Sefton Council will once again be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag to mark the 27th anniversary of the massacre

Srebrenica Memorial Day, a time when people across the UK and Europe remember the dark days in July 1995 when thousands of Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered based on their identity, will be held on Monday, July 11th across the UK.

As with previous years, Sefton Council will be flying the Remembering Srebrenica flag from Monday, July 4th to Monday July 11th to show the borough’s support to those affected.

A Book of Remembrance will also be opened at Bootle Town Hall for people to sign during this time.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “As an organisation we believe we must all remain vigilant against these forces, and take positive action to build stronger, more resilient communities.

“At the time this was one of the worst atrocities on European soil since the Second World War.

“Remembering Srebrenica is about learning and remembering what has happened in the past, and making a commitment to work against it ever happening again. The lesson from Srebrenica is that no society is invulnerable to prejudice and intolerance.”

Every year, Remembering Srebrenica selects a theme that reflects an aspect of the genocide that needs to be commemorated, but also speaks to communities here in the UK.

The theme for 2022 is ‘Combatting Denial: Challenging Hatred’.
